VeloCens
Roshan Water Solutions
VeloCens is a portable device with an easy-to-operate protocol that allows anyone to perform the tests at any point they want and receive the results in only 1 hour.
The underlying technology of VeloCens is based on a very well-known electrochemical method known as Light Addressable Potentiometric Sensor (LAPS). At the heart of VeloCens and the reason our device can test water samples for E.coli and Total Coliforms in 1 hour, is its nanotechnology-sensor based test cartridges. Besides their high sensitivity to bacterial metabolism, the nanostructures are highly flexible allowing modifications to make them selective to one special (E.coli) or a group of bacteria (Total Coliforms). The data processing and results generation is done by AI/ML models developed in-house by Roshan Water’s staff. In short, the user follows instructions to prepare the sample, runs the tests and sees the results after 1 hour on the screen. The results include absence/presence of the target bacteria as well as bacteria counts (quantification) in case of bacteria presence,
To complete the product, we also have added digital components to our solution that are aimed to manage the data fully automatically. There are two sets of information that are generated during the process of testing water samples for bacteria. These are:
- Sample information obtained in the field including date, time and location of the sample.
- Sample test results.
Current practices rely on using paper-based chain of custody (COC) forms to manage the sample information in the field. Studies have shown that the manual transcription of sample information increases the chance of error by 33%. Wrong date, illegible handwriting and missed information have frequently resulted in sample rejection by labs. On the other hand, when tests are finished, test results are normally communicated as pdf files attached to emails. Handling and proper storing of the results can be a hassle and has hampered the use of historical data for future predictions and more informed decision-making. To solve these problems, we have developed two digital components that are interlinked with each other, and with the VeloCens hardware. We provide our customers with QR-coded sampling bottles. With the use of our mobile app (1st digital component), customers can scan the QR-code on the bottle in the field during sampling. That by itself automatically captures the date, time and location of the sample and stores it in the user's device locally. As soon as the user’s mobile phone has internet connection, that information is communicated to our cloud portal (2nd digital component). When a test is done on a sample with VeloCens, test results are also communicated to the cloud portal. We have created a proprietary mechanism that links sample information to test results and generates a full report for the users. Our cloud portal then becomes a complete singular database for our customers to manage and track their information.
