SIWW2024 Water Expo – A global trading platform with regional focus

A cornerstone of SIWW, the Water Expo is the pre-eminent marketplace for the latest urban water technologies, innovation, and solutions for municipal and industrial water users in Southeast Asia.Under a 10-year agreement between SIWW and Messe Munich’s subsidiary, MMI Asia, to organise the SIWW Water Expo in cooperation with IFAT1, the partnership’s first iteration at SIWW2024 brought record breaking results.

Spanning 22,000 gross square metres over two floors, the Water Expo this year saw a high 35% share of international trade visitors, with a significant increase in visitors from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand, underscoring the Water Expo’s distinct value proposition on fulfilling sourcing objectives in the ASEAN region. A marked increase in visitorship was also recorded from Asia-Pacific countries such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

1 World's leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste and raw materials management

Backing the strong visitor numbers is a new record of 51% of exhibiting companies coming from abroad, specifically from 29 countries and regions beyond Singapore. In addition, SIWW2024 Water Expo was grounds to the largest Singapore Pavilion in its 15-year history, and eight other country and regional pavilions from Australia, Canada, China, Flanders, Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, who brought their latest state-of-the-art solutions and technologies to leverage the growing trend of global water companies seeking business in the region. The Expo also recorded a growing representation of water industry players from Germany and China in their respective country pavilions.

Michael Wilton, CEO & Managing Director of MMI Asia said: "SIWW2024 showed impressive results in bringing together global stakeholders needed to support the industry’s transformation in closing the loop for water circularity and supporting climate resilience. The Water Expo continues to be the number one platform for trade visitors, city and utility leaders as well as industry players seeking answers to the varying water challenges. Through Messe Munich’s partnership with Singapore International Water Week, we look forward to hosting even more exhibitors of technological solutions, innovations, and best practices in the next edition of this global event.”

Adapting to and mitigating climate change is crucial

According to Frost & Sullivan, countries in the region are currently seeing water policies and projects align with the EU's green taxonomy. Initiatives in the region are currently addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation, large-scale digitalisation, sustainable water use while transitioning to a circular economy, resource protection, and pollution prevention and control - all of which are geared towards protecting and restoring biodiversity and ecosystems.

Seeing these trends, this year's Water Expo expanded into new growth areas, such as coastal protection, decarbonisation and digitalisation echoing the main themes of SIWW2024. This saw exhibiting companies bringing to the fore best-in-class products and services tailored for cities, utilities, and industries in Southeast Asia to engage in climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Providing solutions towards meaningful climate action

Over half of the exhibiting companies offered water and sewage treatment solutions, water supply and sewage systems, and water supply and sewage disposal systems, catering to the growth of treated wastewater for reuse projects as countries work to improve water supply resilience and reliability.

For example, Maynilad Water Services in the Philippines is developing more projects to localise water production after successfully establishing its water reclamation plant, which produces 10 million litres daily (MLD) of direct potable water.

Developing cities, seeing the gap in demand and supply due to water stress, have increased scrutiny over non-revenue water (NRW) loss and introduced a growing shift to smart water meters to improve the sustainability of the water supply infrastructure, reduce NRW, and optimise asset operation and management.

Air Selangor, a water utility in Malaysia, aims to reduce NRW and is currently trialling smart water meters embedded with acoustic sensors. Last year, it installed 40,000 smart meters, with future plans to cover its 9 million customers. Meanwhile, PUB, Singapore’s national water company, is implementing smart water meters to cover the rest of its 1.6 million accounts this year.

The Water Expo featured exhibiting companies offering smart tech, water digitalisation solutions, coastal protection, and flood resilience for city and utility leaders facing rapid urbanisation and extreme weather-related challenges such as droughts and floods and the pollution and depletion of groundwater, leading to the need to implement climate resilience and adaptation initiatives, digitalise assets, and implement smart water management systems.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's 100 Smart Cities scheme aims to implement smart water grids through its regional water companies. Other water utilities in the region, such as Air Selangor, Manila Water Company, and Maynilad, have installed holistic analytics platforms for network asset management and aim to further expand coverage.

The next edition of Singapore International Water Week will return in 2026.

Singapore, 18 June 2024 – Guest-of-Honour, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, presented the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2024 to Professor Gertjan Medema at the Award Ceremony and Banquet held at The Clifford Pier, The Fullerton Bay Hotel earlier today.

Professor Medema is awarded for his breakthrough research and discovery, and significant contributions in the field of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). His research revolutionised the application of WBE for virus detection in wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the emergence of COVID-19 in early 2020, Professor Medema, a renowned microbiologist and an expert in water quality and health, and his team, recognised the need for early detection and monitoring, and began collecting wastewater samples across the Netherlands to test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He quickly focused his team’s research on curbing the spread of the virus in the community through wastewater surveillance. The results were promising when evidence of the virus was detected in the wastewater of several cities even before they were officially reported in these cities.

Professor Medema's work has been foundational in establishing WBE as a tool for public health surveillance during the pandemic. The impact of his work was evident from his first publication in this area which garnered substantial attention with over 1,400 citations and more than 34,000 views between 2020 and 2023. Wastewater surveillance has since been adopted worldwide as a powerful tool for the early detection of diseases like SARS-CoV-2, even before cases are reported through clinical testing. This in turn provides valuable insights into the prevalence of the virus in a community, and a proven cost-effective and non-invasive method for tracking the spread of the disease.

Launched in 2008, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize honours outstanding contributions by individuals or organisations towards solving the world's water problems by developing or applying innovative technologies or implementing policies and programmes which benefit humanity. The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize is one of the key highlights of the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW).

Renowned Dutch Microbiologist and Expert in Water Quality and Health Named Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2024 Laureate

Singapore, 16 April 2024

Professor Gertjan Medema, 62 years old, has been awarded the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2024 for his breakthrough research and discovery, and significant contributions in the field of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). His research revolutionised the application of WBE for virus detection in wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2      “It is my great honour and privilege to receive the distinguished Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize. This award is a recognition of the innovative use of wastewater as a data source for trends in COVID-19 circulation in our communities. I see it also as a recognition of the hard work of many people in the water sector globally, collecting COVID-19 data from wastewater to support our society’s response to the pandemic. This tightens the connections between the water and health sectors. In the current post-pandemic world, wastewater monitoring is now firmly established as a tool for public health surveillance for an increasing number of diseases,” said Professor Medema, Principal Microbiologist at the KWR Water Research Institute, and the 10th recipient of the award since 2008.

Professor Medema’s contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic

3      With the emergence of COVID-19 in early 2020, Professor Gertjan Medema, a renowned microbiologist and an expert in water quality and health, and his team, recognised the need for early detection and monitoring, and began collecting wastewater samples across the Netherlands to test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He quickly focused his team’s research on curbing the spread of the virus in the community through wastewater surveillance. The results were promising when evidence of the virus was detected in the wastewater of several cities even before they were officially reported in these cities.

4      Professor Medema's work has been foundational in establishing WBE as a tool for public health surveillance during the pandemic.

Wastewater Surveillance in Singapore

5      At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore in 2020, NEA’s Environmental Health Institute (EHI), in collaboration with PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), and other partners from local universities1 and research institutes2 explored wastewater monitoring as an epidemiological tool and early warning system for outbreaks. Through partnerships with relevant institutions3, innovative solutions in wastewater surveillance were quickly developed to respond to the national need. Singapore bolstered its national surveillance efforts for COVID-19 transmission by expanding coverage to hundreds of sites, including water reclamation plants, workers’ dormitories, residential areas, town centres, student hostels, and welfare homes. Today, the wastewater sampling network covers more than 500 sites across Singapore. Apart from situational monitoring of COVID-19, wastewater surveillance has also been applied to monitor Zika transmission in Singapore. NEA and the network of partners will continue to conduct research and development to build on the wastewater testing system, to support public health in Singapore.

Significant impact to global scientific community

6      Wastewater has been tested for SARS-CoV-2 in at least 72 countries at over 4000 reported sites4, with Professor Medema himself connected to about 30% of these programmes directly. Amidst his active involvement in international collaborations, and sharing of expertise and findings with the global scientific community, he has made great contributions to the development of international guidelines and best practices for wastewater surveillance.

7      Dedicated to advancing the science of waterborne pathogens, Professor Medema advises the World Health Organization (WHO) on microbiological drinking water guidelines and Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA); SARS, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH); and wastewater surveillance. He also advises the European Commission on the EU Drinking Water Directives and water reuse guidelines, thereby ensuring that the knowledge gained from his research is disseminated widely and applied effectively. His leadership in this area has helped to establish a network of researchers and practitioners dedicated to using WBE as a tool for public health surveillance. As the world braces itself for other emerging diseases, wastewater surveillance has been established as a vital tool in safeguarding public health through Professor Medema.

8      Professor Medema will receive the Prize – an award certificate, a gold medallion and a cash prize of S$300,000 sponsored by the Temasek Foundation, from Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, at an award ceremony on Tuesday, 18 June 2024. He will deliver a keynote lecture on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, during the Singapore International Water Week 2024, which is expected to be attended by 500 global water leaders, 2,000 delegates, and more than 30,000 trade visitors.
