TF.8 ARe YoU Water Resilient (RUWR)? Asian Development Bank’s Initiatives and Call for Action to Strengthen Water Entities to Embed Resilience in Asia and the Pacific – Curtain Raiser and Pre-launch Dialogue
Co-Organiser: ADB
Access: All delegates and trade visitors
Venue: Room 6, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre
Asia and the Pacific is the most disaster-prone region in the world. Climate change is likely to amplify and intensify the impacts of natural hazards, with unprecedented effects on local economies, populations, and the environment. Focusing on resilient water management has become urgent and central to climate change adaptation. Innovative approaches identified at the local level and aligned with national, regional, and global water goals are required to tackle these challenges.
The Water Sector Group (WSG) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has set up a new initiative called “ARe yoU Water Resilient” (RUWR). RUWR is a dedicated technical assistance platform that aims to support water entities on the ground in the Asia and the Pacific region through capacity building and tools to enable resilience to shocks and stresses, including climate change, pandemics, and financial crises. The RUWR initiative aims to bring about a transformational shift toward water security and resilience in ADB’s developing member countries using a collaborative approach. It will promote learning and knowledge exchange by bringing together key stakeholders, development partners, government representatives, and water service providers from the region.
As part of the initiative, ADB is creating a virtual Asia and the Pacific Water Resilience Hub. The Water Resilience Hub will be a vehicle for strengthening water resilience by establishing partnerships; providing trainings; and developing and sharing knowledge products, innovative methods, tools, data, and digital technologies. It will do this based on needs identified by recipient entities.
ADB is hosting a 1-hour session at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2022 on mainstreaming water resilience in Asia and the Pacific. The session will unveil details of ADB’s new resilience initiatives. A panel of experts, representing diverse water sector stakeholders, will discuss examples, challenges, entry points, and good practices of water resilience in water entities in the region. The event will also be used to announce the formal launch of the initiatives, including RUWR and the Asia and the Pacific Water Resilience Hub, as well as ADB’s forthcoming Guidance Note on Mainstreaming Water Resilience in Asia and the Pacific, at ADB’s Asia Water Forum in August 2022.

TF.9 Futureproofing Cities to Avoid Atlantis – Evolving Finance for Adaptation Solutions
Co-Organiser:
Access: All delegates and trade visitors
Venue: Room 6, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre
The IPCC AR6's warning is explicit – sea level rise of 2m by 2100 and 5m by 2150 "cannot be ruled out due to deep uncertainty in ice sheet processes" if we are unable to rein in emissions. These levels will be existential to Singapore and many other cities and communities along Asia's coastlines - millions of people could lose their homes and trillions of dollars of assets could be stranded.
Such existential threats demand a grand redesign of our cities and careful planning needs to start now. Billions of dollars will have to be raised to adapt and futureproof our cities, yet most of climate financing is skewed towards decarbonisation not adaptation. This is worrying as rising seas could trigger systemic shocks in global financial systems due to their exposure to concentrated chronic risks from coastal threats across Asia.
How can cities and banks survive? Will water risks hamper future investments? Why is it still so hard to raise funds for ambitious adaptation projects? What steps can we take to adapt and thrive?
With a greater than 50% chance of reaching 1.5°C before 2040, there's a narrowing window of opportunity to enact visionary and transformative climate resilient development. The clock is ticking – so join CWR & SIWW for two hours of frank discussions with an all-star line up from adaptation experts and top scientists to top executives from PUB, large asset holders, major global banks, financial regulators and credit rating agencies. See what they have to say on how we can waterproof our cities and financial systems to deliver resilience and avoid Atlantis.

TF.11 One Water: Shifting Paradigms in Critical Resource Synergies
Enabling NextGen Water Resource Recovery through Decarbonisation, Digitalisation and Smart Operations
Co-Organiser: Jacobs
Access: All delegates
Venue: Room 10, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre
The water industry has clearly transitioned from pollution abatement to resource recovery, aiming to become an active participant in circular economy efforts. Yet the full potential of this transformational endeavour will not depend on technology developments solely, but very importantly, on the development of demand for recovered resources. Meanwhile, we have come to the realization that there are three essential enablers that will facilitate the ongoing shifting into this new paradigm: Decarbonisation, Digitalisation, and Smart Operations. This workshop will explore how these elements are not only enablers but should be considered as imperatives in efforts to manage the water cycle in a sustainable and resilient manner as we face the challenges of accelerated urbanization in the 21st century and beyond in both the developed and still developing world.

TF.12 The Future of Water Innovation
Co-Organiser: ZWEEC Analytics
Access: All delegates and trade visitors
Venue: Room 9, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre
Clean water scarcity in the face of growing water demand and the impact of climate change is a major issue in today’s world. The United Nations estimates around 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world’s population shall live in water-stressed regions by 2025. It is increasingly important for societies to effectively conserve, manage and distribute our scarce water resources to address these challenges.
The Fireside Chat: The Future of Water Innovation organised by ZWEEC aims to bring together entrepreneurs in the water sector who would share their entrepreneurial stories, including start-up challenges and winning formula, as they lead their ventures to develop next-generation technologies to tackle current water and utilities challenges with innovative solutions to create a better and more sustainable world.

TF.16 Decarbonisation in Urban Water Renewal
Co-Organiser: AECOM
Access: All delegates and trade visitors
Venue: Room 10, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre
About the Thematic Forum
The water sector accounts for about 2% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and is expected to rise even more significantly by mid-century.
There is much work to be done to drive down the energy intensity of its processes, most notably in wastewater treatment. Water companies and businesses are called to significantly lower their energy consumptions, add renewable supplies and credibly offset where necessary, in order to meet the 2030 net-zero goal set by the water sector. This is also in line with the global drive to construct operate and refurbish urban water infrastructure in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
What the audience will learn
In this panel, major utilities operators and regulators will share their experience in identifying and implementing measures to reduce emissions, make treatment less energy-intensive and the opportunities to recycle the waste products to other sectors, as well as challenges – both from financial and regulatory perspectives. Operators who are in the net-zero water journey will find the discussion relevant as they will hear from those who have successfully pushed for new solutions as well as from companies that are just starting to implement the necessary changes.
